How it works

How a project runs, from first conversation to follow-up

Self-contained projects that I carry out on my own follow the five steps below. Longer-term or team-based work, such as part-time work alongside your staff, is more flexible: together we agree on my hours, which of your meetings and tools I join, and how progress is reported.

  1. Consult

A free 30-minute conversation about your project, whether it starts from a dataset, a question, or just an idea, and what a useful outcome looks like for you.

  2. Plan and estimate

A written estimate of scope, products, and timeline before work begins. It covers vetting your data and the new analysis and code I write; if existing code or data from elsewhere needs repair, I describe the problem and estimate that work separately before starting it.

  3. Work, with regular check-ins

A progress update at about the midpoint, up to four 30-minute video meetings (such as a kickoff, a midpoint review, and a final walkthrough; additional meetings are billed as prorated 30-minute blocks), and email throughout, with replies within two business days.

  4. Deliver

The products we agreed on: a report, a presentation, a shareable web page, documented software, or several of these, with a walkthrough and one round of revisions.

  5. Follow up

Thirty days after delivery for follow-up questions.
